What internet speed do I need?

For browsing and HD streaming, 50 Mbps is plenty. Busy households streaming 4K, gaming and video calling at once are happiest on 100-300 Mbps fibre. Power users, creators and offices should look at 900 Mbps fibre or HyperFibre.

Why is my speed lower than my plan?

Most gaps come from Wi-Fi distance, older devices, or busy household usage rather than the connection itself. Test with an ethernet cable near the router; if it is still well below your plan, contact Be Connect on 0800 233 444 and we will investigate.

Download Speed

Upload Speed

Ping & Jitter

Ping is your connection's reaction time in milliseconds; jitter is how steady that reaction time is. Low numbers mean crisp video calls and lag-free gaming. Under 20ms is excellent for NZ connections.

Getting An Accurate Result

Speed tests measure your whole setup, not just the line. For the truest reading:

Plug in if you can. Wi-Fi is convenient but loses speed through walls and distance — an ethernet cable shows what your connection can really do.
Pause the background noise. Downloads, cloud backups, and everyone else's Netflix all share your line while you test.
Test near the router. If Wi-Fi speed drops dramatically in one room, the issue is coverage — not your plan.
Try a couple of times of day. Evenings are the internet's rush hour; comparing results tells you how your provider handles peak load.
On HyperFibre? A single browser test may max out around 1–2 Gbps — that's a browser limit, not your connection.
